Aston Spirit Review - Trilby - Store DJ Perth
8/02/2016 12:00:00 AM

Aston Spirit Microphone review by Trilby Temperley.

We sell a lot of studio condenser mics, so when I first heard that the Aston Spirit was getting a lot of attention, I knew I had to investigate. Designed to look and sound as perfect as their ’00’ English heritage, Aston have included several innovative features that have until now, been left out of other condenser mics.

Condenser microphones are very sensitive, ensuring you can capture every nuance. This means that when using one, you really benefit from a decent pop filter and cradle isolator. Aston have ingeniously built a pop filter and cradle right into both the Spirit and Origin mics so they can screw straight onto a mic stand: no need for a cradle or mic clip. This may sound like a small feature, but to build it directly into a microphone of this quality is a feature that deserves recognition.

Describing a studio mic’s sound is similar to describing wine notes. The Aston mic is a hearty red - A new vintage. There is a nice organic woodiness in the mid range, that will capture voice, percussion, acoustic guitar or any instrument where that smooth midrange is really important. Compared to the other mics in my home studio I found that the Spirit had a quality that you don't find at this price point. It has a very non-hyped frequency response, which is rare for a condenser mic and gives you that sense that this mic has been beautifully decanted!

The real proof is in the mix. So I recorded a voiceover and some vocals. As I predicted it gave a very pure 'starting point' recording. Without too drastic a tweak I could get to any style of vocal tone out of this mic. Go warm and rich or tune for clarity and sparkle. Most importantly the recording sat in the mix naturally. Some mic recordings need to be moulded to fit into the mix. This one seemed to be at home.

The Aston Spirit features 3 polar patterns (Omni, Cardioid or Figure-of-Eight) that can be selected by a switch on the body of the mic.

I can see some people testing this mic and saying initially "so what", because it doesn’t hype-out the sound. I think anyone with a bit of experience with studio mics will hear that this mic gives you exactly what you need. A solid natural tone.

If you want a mic that is neutral and fits easily in the mix then you need to come in and test out the Aston Spirit or click here to buy now.

Pioneer PLX-1000 Review - Nik - Store DJ Sydney
10/01/2016 12:00:00 AM

When it comes to turntables there's been a bit of a void in the professional turntable market since Technics announced many years ago that the day of the deck was over, but now it's apparently cool to play vinyl again (when was it not cool??!). Pioneer have created the PLX-1000 and have introduced an original piece of DJ kit back into the fold to sit alongside their arsenal of media players, mixers and digital controllers.

So let's take a look at this sexy beast. First things first, the styling is beautiful. The PLX-1000 looks really good with a brushed metal back finish on top, electric blue LED lights and a matt silver tone arm and counterweight. For the uninitiated there's no slots for CD's or input for a USB stick but don't be alarmed as it does play actual records! I did attempt to play a CD on it but it ended up damaging the stylus (so I really don’t recommend trying this at home).

Don't be fooled by the circular Start/Stop button that you may recognise from Pioneer's CDJ/XDJ players either as this is Pioneer's trademark stamp so you know for sure that they invented this piece of machinery. To be fair Pioneer didn't invent the turntable, just this particular one. The circular Start/Stop is there for one job and one job only, to get your wheels spinning so the real action can start.

There's nothing like a good mix-up to give this bad boy a proper workout - so the wheels of steel and I decided to play together. I mixed back and forth with various records and even tried my hand at scratching. Ok, so I am no scratch pro, but I could feel that this deck design is sturdy, strong and would easily hold up to the rigours of any turntablist. After this, I mixed in a much more familiar fashion - dropping beats in breakdowns and this is where I felt the force awaken. The torque that the platter has was more than enough for me work up a good sweat on these decks. Pioneer have really invested in creating a very solid turntable built for high performance DJing.

After my session I felt energised and impressed with how good they felt to play on. Hands down out of all the decks I've tried on the market these are the business. Lets have a look at the other features included in the PLX-1000.

The high torque motor goes from 0 to 33 RPM in 0.3 seconds with a starting force of more than 4.5kg. This is more than double that of the old Technics SL1200 and gives you a much faster response. The PLX-1000 is built like a tank, with a heavy-mass die-cast zinc chassis which prevents resonance and vibrations. The lower part of the turntable is reinforced with 8mm-thick resin and 9mm-thick, vibration dampening material on the base.

The addition of a rubber insulated tonearm also reduces howling effects and there are a host of rubber springs to absorb external vibrations making this a very quiet professional turntable.

Multi-tempo control with options include +/-8%, +/-16% and even +/-50% which is a really handy for DVS and turntablists wanting to stretch out a short sample to make it really long. Pioneer have also included a reset button to instantly bring you back to +/-0% to hear the track as originally intended. Flexibility in the form of interchangeable power and audio cables and pro-grade gold plated RCA jacks ensure amazing sound quality for years to come.

So the wrap - if you want the best of the best when it comes to a Pro-DJ turntable you really can't look at anything but the Pioneer PLX-1000 turntable.

Come down and see me at Store DJ Sydney and I'll run through a demo with you so you can witness these features in the flesh! Click here to view online.

Fluid F5 Review - Baden - Store DJ Perth
1/01/2016 12:00:00 AM

When I was first introduced to these things, I was a little taken aback. While I am a big fan of the minimal monotone black or two toned white/black models, I have been used to seeing a particular style of ‘fashionable’ near-field monitors that have been tuned to sound ‘amazing’.

The Fluid F5’s don’t gun for ‘amazing’ colouring of sound or case, rather are built as a strong reference solution: rock-solid sound in a rock-solid chassis!

These puppies have a no-bull approach which gives them a great reference sound regardless of whether you’re placing them in the kitchen to drown out the noise of the kids, or in the studio as an extra tool to draw upon for mixing/referencing.

In the studio scenario these little guys will be extremely useful to create a transferable mix down and would be just right as a small portable monitor setup for the travelling producer. All this for under $500 bucks! Setup in a live or DJ situation, the Fluid range give you a very flat and honest sound, perfect to hear anything that may sound out of place before a gig. At this price, Fluid speakers offer more than you can imagine and exactly what we all deserve - an honest reference! Click here to buy now.

Pioneer DJM-900NXS2 Review - Tony - Store DJ Brisbane
1/01/2016 12:00:00 AM

My first experience with a Pioneer DJM (DJ Mixer) was when Pioneer launched the then revolutionary DJM500. Instantly capturing the world of DJs, Pioneer mixers are now the main-stay of clubs across the world - and their latest offering, the DJM-900 NXS2 steps up with everything you need to control your audience!

The DJM-900 NXS2 has had a major overhaul, adding features, fine tuning others and still managing to keep the familiar ergonomic layout we all know and love from Pioneer.

There have been significant improvements made to the sound engine with a 64-bit mixing processor and enhanced dithering technology that delivers a warmer deeper, natural analogue sound. The EQ has also been improved and seems to be smoother than its predecessor with the EQ curves having more precision across the highs, mids and lows.

The 3 fader curves have been fine-tuned for more precision and control. There’s a more accurate clip indicator, paired with a redesigned gain structure that ensures meters don’t go into the red too early. There a couple of new effects to check out like ping pong and the helix that sound great when used with the large x/y pad and OLED screen.

The DJM900 NXS2 now contains a separate send/return so you no longer need to select this via the Beat FX to send and return an external effector. This makes a lot of sense when using something like an iPad or the RMX series, as you can select an internal and external effect at the same time. Send/return can be used with 1/4″ jacks or via USB, and brought back into the mixer as insert FX or as AUX input. I am sure we are going to see lots new applications developed for this feature.

The beat FX section now has bass, mid and high isolation allowing the DJ to effect the desired frequency; this idea has been brought over from the legendary DJM2000 and really brings the FX section to life. The colour FX section has also had overhaul with the new sweep replacing gate/comp and with the new parameter control the colour FX can be controlled more smoothly.

One thing that does standout is the new Magvel Fader which is also on the DJM-S9 mixer. This highly responsive magnetic crossfader designed for smooth operation and superb durability. If you’re a DJ duo or if miss place the 1/4inch jack, Pioneer have now included two headphone plugs, a 1/4inch stereo jack and a 3.5mm minipin.

If you are a professional, you want the gear that is used in every professional venue around the world. Come in and try one out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed! Click here to view online.

Pioneer DDJ-SZ guest review by Julia Harvey - Store DJ Perth
1/01/2016 12:00:00 AM

What can be said about the DDJ SZ?

Well, lets start with the obvious - At the first glance this unit totally reminds me of a full pioneer CDJ/DJM setup that has been stuck together with high precision!

The controls all look and feel the same as the units I play with every week in clubs and this is really important for professional DJs as it lets you jump between gear, without having to re-learn how to use jog wheels and other features that are important to our job.

The DDJ-SZ has full DVS support which allows you to connect external turntables or CDJ’s with ease The full CDJ sized jog wheels complete with jog feeling adjust & stop time controls makes this the perfect unit for scratch DJ’s or any professional DJ looking for a setup that mimics the club console.

There are not one but two USB inputs on the rear of the unit for 2 laptops making it perfect for changeover’s and back to back sets, and of course the huge RGB performance pads on either side making it super easy to enable a hot cue / loop or slicer. I had a lot of fun with these controls once I realised you can actually control the volume of your samples depending on how hard or light you hit the pads, which I found to be really handy.

Another awesome feature is the 1 - 4 deck trigger buttons on either side. I couldn’t believe how easy this made it for multi-deck mixing. The previous tracks play seamlessly together while you cue up a 3rd or 4th track which I used to cue up a scratch record with complete ease. The Jog wheels also feature a central display with the playback position and cue point count down similar to that of the pioneer CDJ range. This is a great feature to give you a break from looking at your laptop screen.

If you are looking at buying a new controller, this is the one to go for. This unit has all the bells and whistles you could possibly ever need, is familiar for professionals and has all the latest digital tech that has made Pioneer the brand I always look for when selecting new DJ gear! 10/10 from me. Push In For Push 2
5/11/2015 12:00:00 AM

Ableton Push 2 has launched and is available now at Store DJ. The new Push 2 is once again pushing boundaries for pushy producers everywhere thanks to a host of improvements, upgrades and a beautiful new version of Live (9.5) that seamlessly connects, integrates and communicates with Push 2.

Owners of the original Push can trade-in their old unit for a shiny new one by visiting our trade-in page here.

The look of Push 2 is quite similar to the original, however the feel and features contained within are much more advanced which is surprising, considering how incredible the original Push is. When you do want to plug in, Audio-Technica have you covered; including a USB lead for charging, a standard earphone cable and even an airplane adapter!

Too often people compromise quality for convenience, but with Audio-Technica there’s no need. The ATH-ANC40BT are now available from all Store DJ locations. Click here for a closer look.

Big Features, Small Footprint

Looking for pro Pioneer DJ features at an entry-level price? The XDJ-700 is on its way..

The second instalment in Pioneer’s XDJ range, the XDJ-700 boasts the same stunning, 7-inch, full-colour LCD touchscreen as the XDJ-1000. Great for viewing large waveforms and deep track info, the touchscreen is also perfect for triggering Hot Cues and Loops in perfect time, or searching for tracks with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Get a host of features you’d expect from a more expensive player, including Slip Mode, Vinyl Brake, Quantise and of course Pioneer’s free rekordbox software for preparing your tracks. Simply plug in your rekordbox USB or connect your iPhone, iPod touch or Android smartphone to load tracks directly to the XDJ.

This is Pioneer’s slimmest player ever, yet it can rumble with the big boys. Link to other XDJs or CDJs via Ethernet to expand your setup, synchronise playback and share music libraries. At only 30cms deep, the 700’s small footprint and removable stand makes it adaptable to the tightest of setups at home or in the club - this is the ninja of media players!

With more features per-square-inch than anything else out there, the XDJ-700 is due early in 2016. Check out full product details and pre-order here.

Designed For Creators

Hailing from San Francisco, MONO is the brainchild of Daniel Kushner - an industrial designer and musician who was frustrated with the products on offer. He set out to make the kind of bags he’d want to use, and it shows. MONO bags are super-functional, with all the features you’re looking for, and a few you didn’t know you needed (like cable straps, waterproof compartments and easy access pockets).

These bags are designed for work. Built to military spec, their heavyweight construction will stand up to life on the road. Details like riveted handles, powder-coated zips and a material used to make Navy Seal rafts (!) are the reason that MONO offer a lifetime warranty on all their products.

MONO also understand that this is equipment to be worn. They look great and are comfortable to wear, making you feel like a rockstar, not a pack-horse. We love MONO at Store DJ! These bags are a staff favourite, and many of us head out to gig on the weekend with a MONO bag in tow. Put simply, these are the best bags around.

From headlining DJ to digital photographer, from audiophile to CEO, MONO bags are designed for creators. Store DJ stocks a great range of MONO gear - click here to view the range.

Get The Gear You Want For Less
10/09/2015 12:00:00 AM

Inspiration can come at any time, but having the right equipment to create, record, perform and practise is not always easy. This is due to the upfront cost we have to endure when upgrading, starting out or maintaining our business audio and lighting solutions.

Store DJ is now offering rental of any of our gear (excluding software and perishable accessories) at a fraction of the full price. If you are in a band and need a PA, own a studio and want a particular synth or microphone, are a DJ and want the latest CDJs or even a business looking to add a DJ console or lighting to your venue, then our RentPlus+ rental option gives you even more choice on how to fund your gear.

Renting works in all kinds of situations…

Lets say you are in a band, or you are a mobile musician. Purchasing a good PA system so you can go out and earn money can get expensive fast. A complete system from QSC, such as 2 x QSC K12 Speakers + Stands and QSC KW181 Subwoofer would set you back $5068 if you want to purchase outright. By choosing to use RentPlus+ and renting this same state of the art QSC system, you would pay a relatively tiny $318 per month. By renting, you can pay for the gear as you use and earn money from it. The best thing about renting is that after 6 months, if you don’t need it any more, you can just give it back, keep it or upgrade to something even better.

Getting the perfect synth for your next tour or for your latest album is another example where renting can not only be cost effective to your project, but offer different inspiration - thanks to gaining access to a synth you previously could not justify purchasing. The Moog Minimoog Voyager will cost you $8099 to purchase outright and while it is worth every cent of this, you can rent one thanks to RentPlus+ for $510 per month - Its almost like stealing perfection!

If you are an aspiring DJ and want the latest Pioneer Pro DJ Rig so you can learn how to mix just like the global club superstars then RentPlus+ is perfect. A Pro DJ rig consisting of 2 x CDJ2000 Nexus and a DJM900 Nexus would cost you almost $7570 to take home today. With RentPlus+, you can have these in your setup for just $475 per month - and considering what you can earn per night by using this equipment is a brilliant way to secure your future as a music artist.

You can rent single or multiple items for a minimum of 6 months, then decide to continue renting or return the equipment and get something else! Stay up to date with the latest gear for a fraction of the price and never be left without the right music or lighting gear again. Rental also includes maintenance service during the rental period for non-perishable parts, so you can be sure that you gear will continue to operate.

If you are interested in getting a quote for your next gear purchase, visit Store DJ and every product that is eligible for rent will show up with a weekly rent price, right below the Pay Pal option. Add as many products as you like and it will continue to total things up as you shop.
