Serato

Serato Audio Research is an Auckland, New Zealand based software developer, specialising in audio production and digital dj tools. It was founded in 1998 by Stephen West and AJ Bertenshaw who developed a timestretching and pitch-shifting Pro Tools plugin, Pitch 'N Time.

With that technology they focused on the evolving vinyl emulation software market and developed Scratch Live (digital DJ software), which was first released in 2004. The software required the use of an external sound card to capture audio of the timecoded audio. For this they worked with the famous Washington-based Rane Corporation. Rane developed the USB based SL1 and Serato developed the necessary control records. Scratch Live became a very popular solution for DJs who wanted the control of playing with vinyl, but without the luggage. Serato and Rane have continued their collaboration, improving the product with several updated models.

In 2008, Serato announced the development of Itch (now Serato DJ), an integrated software and hardware system similar to Scratch Live but tied to hardware controllers and with a more simplified interface. Compatible hardware included the Vestax VCI-300 and the Numark NS7. The controllers connect via USB and use MIDI to communicate with Itch. 2008 also saw Serato release the first major plugin for Scratch Live, Video-SL, allowing the playback of video files in similar fashion to audio files. Users can apply effects in real time and mix between video independently of audio.

After years in the professional audio software industry Serato had amassed an enviable collection of business partners and strategic relationships. After a meeting of minds Serato and Berlin’s Ableton agreed to develop a high level of interoperability into their Scratch Live and Ableton Live products. The result was The Bridge - Scratch Live and Ableton Live working in harmony together, released in 2010. Scratch Live DJs could sync Ableton Live sessions with their DJ set and record a mixtape as an editable Ableton Live session. Other producers such as Pioneer have built Serato functionality directly into their units.
