About Shure

Shure

Shure was founded by Sidney N. Shure in 1925 as "The Shure Radio Company", selling radio parts kits in the days before complete manufactured radios were available. The company's office was located in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The following year, Shure published its first direct mail catalogue, which was one of only six radio parts catalogues in the United States at the time.

In 1931, Shure and engineer Ralph Glover began development of the first Shure microphone, and the following year, the Model 33N Two-Button Carbon Microphone was introduced, making Shure one of only four microphone manufacturers in the United States. Their first condenser microphone, crystal microphone, and microphone suspension support system (for which they received their first patent) were all introduced that same decade. In 1939, they introduced the Model 55 Unidyne Microphone, which went on to become one of the world's most recognised microphones.

In the 1940s, they began manufacturing turntable cartridges (needles) and was the largest producer in the U.S. at that time. Among their innovations in cartridge design their ‘needle-tilt’ principle for minimising record wear and the engineering concept of ‘trackability’. To this day many of the worlds best scratch DJs rely on Shure cartridges because not only do they sound great, but they ‘stick like glue’.

In the 1960s, Shure debuted their famous SM58 microphone, releasing several revisions since. The choice of many performers both in the studio and on-stage, you’Ve definitely heard this microphone in action.
