Whether you're wanting to record DJ sets, make field recordings for audio compositions and sampling or just get an upgrade on using your smartphone for capturing sound, a portable recorder is a fantastic option. Roland have just released their newest entry into the market - the R-07 and it's got a pretty smart feature set, so we thought we'd take a look.

Roland have built the R-07 around ease of use, coupling high quality, professional audio with a simple interface and a range of automated parameters to ensure it remains accessible to different experience levels. Somewhat of a successor to the highly popular R-05, the R-07 features high-resolution recording, a pair of built in microphones, internal speaker (mono playback only), in-built tuner and metronome and a single 1/8" aux/mic input. Recordings can be done in stereo and mono using the built-in mics, or by plugging an external microphone or line out (DJ mixer etc.) into the aux input. The format is selectable as WAV (up to 24-bit/96kHz) or Mp3 (up to 320kbps) and it's all packaged in a rugged yet attractive housing that's smaller than most smartphones and is available in three colours.

All this makes for a really solid, well equipped portable recorder, but where the R-07 really shines is in some of the more modern features Roland have implemented. For instance, it has an intelligent dual recording system, which will simultaneously record two versions of the audio you're capturing - one at whatever settings you've selected and another with less gain. Meaning, if the audio clips at any point you have a second instance, recorded at a lower volume that you can edit into the original recording where the clipping has occurred, rather than having to re-record! It actually has a feature called Hybrid limiting that will handle this automatically if you wish. This is especially handy for recording DJ sets, where it's very easy to clip the input without realising.

It also features a one button set-up program, which Roland have called "Rehearsal" mode. Hit this button and start talking or playing as you would when recording and the R-07 will set limiting and input settings automatically. This is a fantastic addition for anyone who’s not familiar with the ins-and-outs of capturing audio and may find scrolling through menus to set input gain, low-cut frequency and limiter threshold levels a little daunting. While on the point of configuring levels, the R-07 stores presets known as "Scenes", allowing you to save and recall combinations of settings for different recording situations. Highly useful if you're likely to be recording in the same or similar environments regularly. This is one we feel would be really great for those who like to record their own samples for music production. You could set up different scenes for the places you like to capture sound, i.e. City, Park, Bedroom and just recall those environmental settings quickly and easily.

The R-07 also features Bluetooth capabilities. Allowing you to monitor and listen back wirelessly with supported Bluetooth speakers and headphones (the R-07 uses Bluetooth Qualcomm® aptX™ technology). Furthermore, Bluetooth integration allows the unit to be controlled remotely via a free app - you can set the R-07 in an ideal recording position and then start/stop recording and adjust parameters using a smartphone or smartwatch.

Top it off with 15 hours of continuous recording or 30 hours of continuous playback from a pair of AA batteries (it's also USB bus powered) and you have a versatile portable recording solution that manages to simultaneously offer processional level audio quality while simplifying complex technological features, so it remains accessible to a wide range of users.
